What rules of hygiene and sterilization are followed?
Calypso Tattoo complies with the strict standards set out in the Belgian Hygiene Quality Label. This includes use of high grade autoclave and sterilization equipment, new and sterilized single-use needles, disposal ink, surgical soap, latex gloves, etc. The studio has also recently undergone a make-over where full wall tiles, washable paint, and supplies geared towards preventing cross-contamination have been installed.
Compliance with hygiene standards are followed at conventions and in guest spots as well as in the studio.
How far in advance should I schedule an appointment?
In Belgium, one month in advance is sufficient for all our artists but you are free to stop by the studio, call or email to see if there is time available within that time.
For conventions and guest spots outside of Belgium, most people make appointments six months in advance, especially for New York and London, but again, you are free to contact Dan in less than six months time to see if there is an opening.
Must I leave a deposit for an appointment?
Yes, deposits are required and depend on the total cost of the piece. For conventions and guest spots, deposits can be paid via International Money order or via Pay Pal using your credit card.
How much does a tattoo cost?
The price of the tattoo depends on the level of detail, the size, and placement of the work. Generally, Dan charges by the piece, not the hour.
Can the design be worked out prior to the appointment if I live outside of Belgium or getting tattooed at a convention or guest spot?
A great deal of Dan’s work is done freehand, that is, designing on the body with marker, to create a harmony with the body. However, Dan will often design the basic sketch in advance. To do this, you do not have to tell Dan exactly what you want but just give ideas and references and he will create something special for you. It’s often custom to email a photo of the where you would like tattooed to give Dan an idea of the size and shape of your body.
Can I get a copy of the sketch in advance?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. This is because some unscrupulous people in the past have asked for designs and never kept their appointments. That said, changes to the design are possible the day of your appointment so that you get exactly what you want.
I saw a tattoo in a magazine and I would like the exact one. Can you tattoo it for me?
Calypso Tattoo respects the copyright of other artists and will never duplicate custom work. You can bring in photos and designs as references and Dan will create a tattoo that is unique to you.
Calypso Tattoo has a zero-tolerance policy against others copying the work of our clients. To learn more about tattoo copyright, read Marisa’s articles here: "The Tattoo Copyright Controversy" and "Fighting Back: Enforcing Tattoo Copyright"
How should I prepare for my tattoo?
Eat well and drink plenty of water before your appointment. Do not drink any alcohol or take any drugs 24 hours prior. No one under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be tattooed. Alcohol also thins the blood, which is not good for your tattoo. For this reason, try to avoid aspirin as well.
How do I take care of my tattoo?
You will receive aftercare instructions after your tattoo session. Please take these instructions seriously to ensure proper healing. Above all, keep the following in mind: keep it clean; do not scratch – especially don’t pick at the scabs; keep your tattoo out of the sun until it heals; do not go swimming until healed; and avoid exercising until healed because stretching and pulling the skin can affect the tattoo.
How long does healing take?
Healing time differs from person to person – it can be one week to ten days. Proper aftercare will aid in healing time.
How do I keep my tattoo looking good after it’s all healed?
Sunscreen is key to keeping your tattoo looking fresh, as well as regular moisturizing of your skin. Healthy living will keep your skin looking good, tattooed or not.
